Why Kim faced a lawsuit at Jeff Bezos' star-studded wedding

While attending Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez’s lavish wedding in Venice in late June 2025, Kim Kardashian was simultaneously dealing with a lawsuit back in the U.S. The reality TV personality and criminal justice advocate signed legal filings on June 26, just a day before the celebrations began.

The case stems from a 2024 Instagram post in which Kardashian shared content to highlight the plight of a Texas death row inmate named Ivan Cantu. However, due to a name mix-up, the post mistakenly included a photo of another man with the same name — a project manager based in New York.

Wrong image leads to emotional distress suit

In court documents, the plaintiff alleged that Kardashian’s post caused him significant distress, including anxiety, loss of sleep, and PTSD. He also claimed invasion of privacy, stating that the viral post wrongly associated him with a capital murder case.

The photo was reportedly taken down within hours, and Kardashian's legal team called the suit baseless. Her lawyer stated that the image was used in error and described the lawsuit as an opportunistic response to an honest mistake.

Public apology and signed declaration

Kim Kardashian issued a public apology shortly after the mistake was brought to her attention. In a signed declaration submitted during her time in Venice, Kardashian clarified that the image mix-up was unintentional. “I would not have used the image… had I known that it was a picture of Plaintiff and not Mr. Cantu,” she stated.

She also stressed that her criminal justice reform work is driven by personal conviction and not profit. “The use of Plaintiff’s image… was a mistake and was not done intentionally,” Kardashian added.

Lawsuit still ongoing

Though Kardashian has responded with both legal documentation and a public statement, the case remains active. It underscores the potential legal risks of high-profile advocacy work on social media — even for someone with legal ambitions like Kardashian.

Even amid global celebrity events, legal missteps can surface — as Kim Kardashian found out during her trip to Venice.
