Detective Conan Films Surpass 100 Million Moviegoers; Becomes Third Franchise In Japan To Achieve This Feat

The Detective Conan movie franchise has achieved a monumental milestone, surpassing a total of 100 million viewers in Japan. This remarkable feat is attributed to the 27th film in the series, “Detective Conan: The Million-Dollar Pentagram,” garnering over 6.44 million viewers and 9.2 billion yen in just 18 days.

In doing so, Detective Conan becomes the third franchise in Japan to achieve the feat of 100 million tickets sold after Doraemon and Godzilla.

Distributor Toho highlighted the significance of this milestone, emphasizing that reaching 100 million with the 27th film is the fastest record in history.

“The number of 100 million people is close to Japan’s population and is truly a remarkable achievement worthy of being called a national work. In addition, surpassing 100 million people is a record following the movies ‘Doraemon’ and ‘Godzilla’ series, but surpassing it with the 27th instalment is the fastest record in history!

To celebrate this landmark occasion, a commemorative video has been released, showcasing iconic scenes from the entire movie franchise, spanning from the very first film, Detective Conan: Time-Bombed Skyscraper, to the latest instalment.

The manga’s author, Gosho Aoyama, expressed his gratitude and excitement on the achievement, jokingly noting the film’s title’s coincidental association with the 100 million figure.

Hello, it’s Aoyama! Congratulations and thank you for reaching 100 million moviegoers! It’s quite a coincidence that this year’s movie title, ‘Million Dollars,’ is roughly equivalent to 100 million yen. What? Is it more than 100 million yen due to the weak yen? Don’t say such harsh things (laughs).

Conan’s voice actor Minami Takayama also conveyed heartfelt appreciation to fans for their unwavering support throughout the franchise’s journey.

“Thank you very much for your always passionate support. Surpassing 100 million people? I was momentarily stunned by the sudden good news. It truly feels like we’ve received the proof of being a national anime, and I’m really, really moved. The Conan family continues to run supported by your ‘Conan love.’ We will do our best to deliver works that you would want to watch again and again, that you would want to immerse yourself in this world forever, with all our strength and love. Please continue to play catch with ‘Conan love’ from now on. With gratitude for all 27 works.

Detective Conan: The Million-Dollar Pentagram hit the Japanese theatres on April 12, 2024.

The film had also achieved the second highest opening weekend collection for an anime movie, overtaking the opening week gross of JJK 0 movie (2.6 billion yen).

It also surpassed the opening day numbers of the 26th feature film with a significant 112% increase.

Chika Nagaoka served as the director for Detective Conan: The Million-Dollar Pentagram, with screenplay by Takahiro Okura.

The 26th feature film, Detective Conan: Kurogane no Submarine released on April 14, 2023.

Twenty-seven feature films based on the Case Closed series have been released. They are animated by TMS Entertainment and produced by Yomiuri Telecasting Corporation, Nippon Television, ShoPro, and Toho. The first seven were directed by Kenji Kodama, films 8–14 were directed by Yasuichiro Yamamoto, films 15-21 were directed by Kobun Shizuno, film 22 was directed by Yuzuru Tachikawa, films 23 and 24 were directed by Chika Nagaoka, and film 25 was directed by Susumu Mitsunaka.

Detective Conan, is a Japanese detective manga series written and illustrated by Gosho Aoyama. It has been serialized in Shogakukan’s shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shonen Sunday since January 1994, with its chapters collected in 102 tankōbon volumes as of September 2022.

Due to legal problems with the name Detective Conan, the English language releases from Funimation and Viz were renamed to Case Closed.

The anime version of Case Closed is produced by Yomiuri Telecasting Corporation and TMS Entertainment. Over 1000 episodes have aired in Japan since the anime’s premiere on January 8, 1996, making it the fifteenth longest anime series to date.
