Re:Zero: Is Sirius Romanee Conti Really Fortuna Revived?

Hero Image

The , in Season 2 of Re:Zero was a heart-wrenching moment for fans. It impacted us as much as it did Emilia.

Her tragic end came at the hands of Petelgeuse, manipulated by twisted scheme. With the story moving into new arcs, it seemed as if we were moving on from her.

However, a peculiar character has emerged—Sirius Romanee-Conti, the Sin Archbishop of Wrath—who may have a surprising connection to Emilia’s past.

Given the eerie similarities between Sirius and Fortuna, it is possible that Sirius could be a twisted revival of Fortuna herself. This theory is compelling, and it is quite popular in the fandom even.

In fact there are several hints that point to this possibility.

Is Sirius Romanee Conti Fortuna?

Although it’s not confirmed, there are numerous signs suggesting that Sirius may indeed be Fortuna. At this point, there are many who believe that it would be surprising if these two don’t share the same identity.

Well, without further ado, here’s what we know so far:

Physical Similarities

Sirius and Fortuna share striking physical traits. Both have silver hair and amethyst-colored eyes (purple eyes). It is also speculated that they both are of the same height. But that’s not all.

Sirius’ hair indeed is longer than Fortuna’s. But then, we can attribute that to the time passed. Can’t we?

Its true that her body is wrapped in bandages, making it difficult to discern her features completely. But, in Re:Zero Season 3 Episode 1, despite the bandages, we can see that Sirius’ ears are clearly shaped like those of an elf.

Sirius is also noted as one of the physically strongest Sin Archbishops, a trait uncommon among regular humans but more typical for elves, such as Emilia and Fortuna.

This, coupled with her elven-like ears, makes it plausible that Sirius could indeed be an elf, linking her further to Fortuna.

One might argue that the silver hair and the eye color are not big factors to support the theory. However, in the world of Re:Zero, these specific traits, combined with the fact that the person is an elf, only points that they are connected to Emilia’s lineage.

And the obvious hiding of the identity with the bandages point to the fact it could very well be someone we know – hinting at the possibility that the Sin Archbishop of Wrath really is Fortuna.

The love for Petelgeuse

Both Sirius and Fortuna had strong feelings for different versions of Petelgeuse.

While Fortuna shared a romantic relationship with Petelgeuse before he became a member of the Witch Cult—depicted during Emilia’s past in the Sanctuary Trials of Season 2—Sirius exhibits an obsessive attachment to his current form as the Sin Archbishop of Sloth.

This strong emotional tie, spanning across different timelines and forms, suggests that they both have something identical about them. This love for Petelguese is .

Additionally, the Re:Zero light novel covers for Volumes 14 and 16 support this theory.

Volume 14 depicts Petelgeuse, Emilia, and Fortuna bonding like a family, reflecting their past connection.

Conversely, Volume 16 portrays Sirius Romanee-Conti hugging a deranged Petelgeuse after he had taken in the Witch Factor of Sloth and become a member of the Witch Cult.

Newspoint

These covers, mirroring each other in composition and tone, suggest a deliberate comparison between the old and new versions of these characters—potentially indicating that Sirius could indeed be Fortuna reborn or revived in a twisted form.

Same magic type

If I say both Sirius and Fortuna have the same magic type, would you believe me? Well, we see Fortuna using Ice attacks, whereas, Sirius is seen using Fire as her primary attack element (other than her Witch Factor ofcourse).

RELATED:

But, if you are an ardent Re:Zero fan, you’ll know that both fire and ice are the same magic type in this universe created by Tappei Nagatsuki.

So, naturally, both Sirius and Fortuna have the affinity for the same magic, with the only difference being, Fortuna chooses to attack with ice, i.e. reducing the temperature, and Sirius opts for fire attacks, which could be a symbol of her burning passion!

A hint from the past

There is another interesting detail revealed in a side story accompanying Volume 23: Sirius mentions that her hometown was destroyed by a Witch Hunt in the past.

On the surface, this might not seem significant. However, connecting it to the fact that Sirius is an elf, and that elves were used as bait to kill Minerva—the Witch of Wrath herself—we can draw some conclusions.

Considering how Minerva behaved with Emilia during the tea party, many speculate that she may have been Emilia’s mother. Setting aside that theory, it’s plausible that the village where Minerva was brought down was actually Fortuna’s village.

In this context, Sirius could very well be recounting this tragic story to Felt and Reinhard.

All these hints undoubtedly point to the possibility that Sirius may indeed be Fortuna.

However, one detail that challenges this theory is that the voice actors for Sirius and Fortuna are different in the Japanese version of the anime.

While Sirius is voiced by Chika Anzai, Fortuna is voiced by Haruka Tomatsu. If the same voice actor were used, it might have blatantly confirmed their connection.

Since this theory hasn’t been confirmed even in the Web Novels of Re:Zero, this might have been a deliberate choice by the production team or author Tappei Nagatsuki to keep the mystery intact.

Now, if Sirius really is Fortuna, another crucial question arises: How did Fortuna turn into Sirius?

How Did Fortuna Revive and Become a Sin Archbishop?

Fortuna’s death is etched into the hearts of Re:Zero fans. So, how could someone who was dead and most likely buried in the snow return as a Sin Archbishop?

The simplest answer is Pandora—the Witch of Vainglory.

Pandora was present during Fortuna’s death, making her involvement highly suspect. With her ability to alter reality itself, it’s plausible that she could have brought Fortuna back to life and forcibly transformed her into a puppet of carnage.

We already know that Pandora can revive people or reanimate corpses with almost perfect accuracy, thanks to a heartbreaking example in Arc 5.

The fact that these events are mentioned in the same arc where Sirius is introduced lends more credibility to the theory that Pandora meddled with the incident.

Once revived, it would have only taken the infusion of a Witch Factor to drive Fortuna mad, just like what happened to Petelgeuse when he became the Sin Archbishop of Sloth.

Sirius’s heavily bandaged body which does a good job of hiding her identity, could also be hiding the frostbites possibly caused by Emilia’s act of freezing the entire forest in rage after Pandora’s manipulations. That would be a sweet justification for her appearance!

Or maybe Pandora is just toying with everyone.

Fortuna’s Unresolved Narrative Potential

No matter how we look at it, Fortuna’s narrative potential was not fully utilized. Her death served a purpose, but she was at the center of so many unresolved questions that it seemed premature to write her out of the story completely.

Why was she guarding ? What critical task did Emilia’s parents entrust her with?

These lingering questions suggest there may still be more to Fortuna’s story. Even Tappei Nagatsuki, who live-tweets during the episodes’ airing, made a cryptic post during the episode where Fortuna died.

Although he stated that Fortuna’s “story” ended in Episode 19 of Season 2, he hinted that the unanswered questions would be addressed sometime in the future. And what better way to answer them than by reintroducing Fortuna in the series?

Perhaps I’m overreaching, but Nagatsuki’s phrasing about Fortuna’s story ending almost sounded like a question, leaving room for her return and further development.

I’ll end this post with a translation of !

Fortuna’s words sound like delirious mutterings.
It will be a long time before we learn what exactly Emilia’s parents entrusted to her and what promises they exchanged, but her story ends here… doesn’t it?
