Taz Skylar Addresses Criticism He Received On Social Media Following One Piece Live-Action Casting Announcement

During the Paris Fan Festival, Taz Skylar, the actor cast to portray Sanji in Netflix’s One Piece Live-Action series, opened up about the initial wave of negative comments he faced on social media following the casting announcement.

One Piece casting news came out. He revealed that his friends informed him that his name was trending on Twitter alongside references to his resemblance to rapper Eminem.

“The best way to get me to do something is tell me I can’t do it,” Skylar stated, revealing that rather than being deterred by the negative feedback, he found motivation in the challenge. “I remember I laughed because I was like, you know what, they have a point. I do kind of look a little bit like Em,” he added.

However, he admitted that the real blow came when videos of him practicing martial arts for the role were leaked online, garnering a wave of backlash. “I admittedly came from nothing…I wanted to try, I wanted to do my best

,” Skylar expressed, revealing his vulnerability in facing it.

Describing the experience as hard, he confessed to initially struggling with the onslaught of negativity directed towards him. “Having never dealt with thousands of people saying at the same time, ‘This is going to fail, this is horrible, you are horrible,’ it took me a minute to deal with it,” he shared.

Yet, Taz didn’t let the criticism deter him. Instead, he channelled his frustration into action, embarking on a journey to earn two black belts and a blue belt in martial arts. “My way of dealing with it was I went and I got two black belts and a blue belt, and now nobody can say shit

,” he boldly declared, drawing applause from the audience.

Taz Skylar is a Spanish and English actor and screenwriter based in London. After the success of his self written off-West-end play, Warheads, he went on to write and star in Gassed Up for Amazon Prime and plays Sanji in the Netflix series One Piece

Netflix’s live action adaptation of One Piece released on Aug 31, 2023. A second season is confirmed for 2025 release.

The cast includes Iñaki Godoy, who portrays Monkey D. Luffy, Emily Rudd as Nami, Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp, and Taz Skylar will play Sanji. Colton Osorio will portray a young Luffy.

Furthermore, Peter Gadiot will play Shanks, Morgan Davies as Koby, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino as Alvida, Aidan Scott as Helmeppo, Jeff Ward as Buggy, McKinley Belcher III as Arlong, and Vincent Regan as Garp.

It was previously revealed that the original Japanese voice actors will be returning to portray their characters for the Japanese dub of the live-action adaptation

The soundtrack for the live action, titled “Wealth, Fame, Power,” is composed by Sonya Belousova and Giona Ostinelli, best known for their work on “The Witcher“.

Netflix is exclusively streaming the series, produced by Tomorrow Studios, a partnership between producer Marty Adelstein and ITV Studios.
