  • Maruti Suzuki XL6 went on sale on 21 August.

  • Managed to outsell the Mahindra Marazzo by a large margin for the month of August.

  • Figures stand at 2356 units for the XL6 and 697 units for the Marazzo.

The Maruti Suzuki XL6 has outsold the Mahindra Marazzo by a large margin for the month of August 2019. Maruti managed to move 2356 units of the XL6, while Mahindra managed to shift only 697 units of the Marazzo. The difference becomes even starker when you consider that the XL6 went on sale officially on the 21st of August, while the Marazzo had the entire month to come up with that figure.

The XL6 and Marazzo both compete for the same slice of pie – that of the premium MPV in the price bracket that used to be occupied by the Toyota Innova. Since Toyota has taken that product much further north on the sticker price, there is a space vacant between the likes of India’s most popular MPV, the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, and the enormously premium Toyota Innova Crysta. Mahindra had attempted to fill that space with the Marazzo – the last in a string of hopefuls, including the Renault Lodgy and Honda BR-V. While the Marazzo managed to sell in decent numbers last August, nearer its launch, with 1762 units, this year the general negative sentiment towards car buying has hit it especially hard. It didn’t help that the XL6 was launched, and the latter is based on the Ertiga, which is a trusted name and which sells extremely well to this day.

Speaking of the Ertiga, it managed to sell 8391 units in August 2019, an untouchable figure for anything else in its class. However, if you keep in mind that the XL6 had just ten days to get that sales figure of 2356 units… The sales figures for the month of September 2019 will paint a clearer image of the Ertiga has finally got a real threat to its crown. It’s only fitting that the challenge should come from something based on it.
