ICC World Cup 2019: A big win for Pakistan as they defeat New Zealand by 6 wickets

As Pakistan registers their third win of the ICC World Cup 2019 bringing them to the sixth position with 7 points, they have managed to keep their hopes alive for the Semi-Finals.

On Wednesday at Edgbaston, Pakistan team put up a close chase after losing the toss. New Zealand opted to bat first and set a score of 237 at the loss of six wickets. The team had a slow start where the top performers for the team were James Neesham who scored 97 off 112 balls, Colin de Grandhomme scored 64 off 71 balls and Kane Williamson made 41 off 69 balls. It was the bowling side who faced the biggest challenge as Kane Williamson, Trent Boult and Lockie Ferguson dismissed 1 wicket each.

New Zealand’s bowling attack failed against the Pakistan batsmen as Babar Azam scored a fabulous 101 off 127 balls, for his performance he was awarded with the ‘Man of the Match’ title. Haris Sohail scored 68 off 76 balls and Mohammad Hafeez made 32 off 50 balls. The bowling department too had a better day as Shaheen Afridi dismissed 3 wickets whereas Shadab Khan and Mohammad Amir grabbed a wicket each.

With tonight’s defeat, New Zealand remains at the second position with 11 points and Pakistan moves up a spot to the sixth position with 7 points. Although, Pakistan will have to fight many battles to confirm their ticket to the Semi-Finals. Their next match will be against Afghanistan on Saturday, 29 June, whereas New Zealand will face Australia on the same day.
