3 players Delhi Capitals (DC) should pick in IPL trade ahead of 2020 season
With nothing to lose and everything to gain, the Delhi based franchise, with a new name, entered the IPL 2019. Since 2012, the team had never reached the playoffs, becoming one of the most unsuccessful teams in the IPL history. However, the 2019 edition saw a new kind of fire in the team.
Delhi Capitals reached the Qualifier 2 of the season, where they lost against the eventual runners-up CSK. However, Shreyas Iyer-led team had already regained the trust of the fans and promised to reach even newer heights in the next season. The team had very few vulnerabilities last time around. And they would be eager to iron out even those minor weaknesses in their squad.
They have already traded Mayank Markande from Mumbai Indians with the reports also stating that the talks of roping in Ajinkya Rahane are also in progress.
Here we take a look at three players DC should pick in the IPL trade ahead of next season: 1. Manan VohraManan Vohra was picked in the Rajasthan Royals’ squad for the IPL 2019. However, in a batting heavy unit, he failed to get any game throughout the season. His batting skills went completely unutilized, which isn’t the justice to his enormous talent. Moreover, the Royals would also like to release him, for his and the team’s benefit.
Delhi Capitals too struggled to find a solid batsman in the lower middle order last time around. They gave chances to Colin Ingram and Sherfane Rutherford, but both of them failed to create a decisive impact. This was a huge reason for the team’s batting collapse, which snatched from their hands good positions on more than one occasion.
Therefore, the addition of Vohra in the squad could help the team solve its woes. The 26-year-old is a multi-dimensional player. He can instantly go for the kill and his strike rate of 131.77 giving the testimony for it. Moreover, he is a good innings builder, who can steady the pace of the innings in case of a collapse.
Delhi Capitals lack a good all-rounder in their squad. They have Axar Patel, but he hasn’t been able to contribute much with the bat as he has done with the ball. Keemo Paul also has been grossly underperforming, and after trading Sherfane Rutherford to Mumbai Indians, the all-rounders’ spot is vacant.
Carlos Brathwaite can help the team to solve this problem. The 31-year-old, who played for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the previous season, could get a chance in only 2 games, due to the presence of Andre Russell – one of the finest all-rounders in world cricket. In that scenario, Braithwaite is unlikely to get many chances in the next season as well.
Doing away with Brathwaite will ease up quite a purse value (Rs 5 crores) for the Kolkata based franchise. He can be the finisher for the Capitals, and also be a part-time bowler. Therefore, it won’t be a bad deal to make and more so after the way he batted at times in the World Cup.
3. Sandeep SharmaSandeep has been an integral part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad squad for seasons now. With the ability to swing the ball in both the directions and use the slower ones with utmost precision, he can be a potent weapon in the powerplay as well as the slog overs.
However, his performance in the last season was far from what is expected from a player like him. Though he scalped 12 wickets in 11 games, his economy and average weren’t convincing at all. Moreover, with Khaleel Ahmed, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Siddarth Kaul being there, he might not fit into the setup anymore.
Therefore, trading him with Capitals won’t be a bad option. The team desperately needs an Indian pace option, since Ishant Sharma is a bit inconsistent. He and Kagiso Rabada can form a reliable pair for the Capitals with the new ball.
