3 teams that should eye Ganeshan Periyasamy in IPL 2020 auction
Chepauk Super Gillies won their second title by beating Dindigul Dragons in the final of Tamil Nadu Premier League 2019. Chepauk’s right arm pacer Ganeshan Periyasamy was adjudged Man of the Match in the final as well as Man of the tournament. Defending a low score of 127 runs, Periyasamy took two wickets in his first over and 3 wickets in the last over to end with figures of 5/15.
He bagged a total of 21 wickets in 9 matches, which is the highest for any bowler in the 4-year history of TNPL. He has a slinging action much similar to Sri Lankan legend Lasith Malinga. Periyasamy’s title-winning heroics wouldn’t go unnoticed.
Over the years IPL has been unearthing talents from different parts of the country; Pandya brothers, Jasprit Bumrah, Navdeep Saini, Prasidh Krishna are some of the many examples. The 25-year-old pacer would be hopeful of an IPL contract in the upcoming auction for the 13th season.
For the last 12 years, RCB has started the season with a lot of expectations but were futile with the results. With the enormity of superstars present in the team, they will look to get a hold on the trophy for the first time. But a star-studded batting line-up could not compensate for poor selections and an average bowling unit.
Last season, RCB had a disastrous start to their campaign losing the first six games and ended up rotting at the bottom of the table. RCB splashed out money on Shimron Hetmyer and Shivam Dube in the last auction, which turned out to be failures. Their death bowling will once again be under surveillance.
Dale Steyn is likely to continue to be their spearhead and the rise of Saini will give them plenty of pace in the tank. But Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Siraj’s middling death bowling record are nothing but a nightmare for Bangalore fans. In that case, RCB would want to secure the services of TNPL’s star pacer, Periyasamy. His death bowling could be utilized to end RCB’s title drought.
It is at the auction where a title-winning team is blended. And invariably, most of the action takes place at the table of Kings XI Punjab. The Kings have revamped their team plenty of times in the quest for their maiden title. Their constant changing of captain and coaches hasn’t helped their cause either. In Ravi Ashwin, the franchise has an astute mind on the field, but even he could not take the team to the playoffs. The batting of Punjab is filled with young and exciting talents but their bowling especially the pace attack seems to lack the extra zip. The Mohali track contains a tinge of green to support fast bowlers. Hence the Punjab based franchise would like to bid for Periyasamy, who has been impressive in the death in TNPL. He could be the X-factor which Punjab has lacked in the last few seasons.
Chennai Super KingsThe Chennai Super Kings is the second most successful franchise in the IPL with three titles in their cabinet. Pacers like Lakshmipathy Balaji, Doug Bollinger, Albie Morkel and Dwayne Bravo were instrumental for CSK’s success over the years. The batting unit is very stable but their seamers have been leaking runs in the last couple of seasons.
Mohit Sharma was bought for 5 crore INR in the previous auction but he was included for just a solitary game. Dwayne Bravo’s death overs dexterity has been diminishing. After Lungi Ngidi and David Willey pulled out, CSK’s bowling looked bleak and harmless. Excluding Deepak Chahar, other Indian pacers; Shardul, Mohit and KM Asif couldn’t put any noteworthy performances.
Periyasamy’s average of 10 and economy of little over 6 runs per over, might tempt CSK to go for the Tamil Nadu born seamer in the auction next year. There couldn’t be a better learning harbour for a youngster other than under Dhoni and CSK. Periyasamy would bring the local flavour and experience- CSK could well be on track for their fourth title.
