MP Navneet Rana Vs IPS Arti Singh: Parliament Privileges Committee Summons Amravati Police Commissioner

New Delhi: The controversy between Maharashtra's Amravati Independent Lok Sabha MP Navneet Ravi Rana and Amravati Police Commissioner Arti Singh has reached the doorstep of Parliament. Arti Singh has been summoned to appear before the Privileges Committee of Parliament on 14 October. Beside, Shashikant Shatav, Deputy Commissioner of Police of Amravati Zone 2 has also been called.

Navneet Rana has alleged that she was illegally  arrested and was treatedly inhumanly at Khar police station. She had written a letter to the Privileges Committee of Parliament alleging breach of privilege for which the Committee has summoned Arti Singh. The matter dates back to 12 January last year.

The Committee comprises of 14 Members of Parliament including MP Sunil Kumar Singh as its Chairman. After hearing both the sides, the Committee will decide whether Arti Singh has intentionally violated Rana's privileges. The troubles for Arti Singh may mount if she is found guilty.

When Amravati MP Navneet Ravi Rana was asked about it, She said that Amravati Police Commissioner Dr. Arti Singh deliberately arrested her, causing obstruction in the discharge of her parliamentary duties.

The MP further said that on that day she was to meet the then Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray in Mumbai to give a memorandum and then had to fly from Mumbai to attend the meeting of Parliamentary Committee in Delhi. But Arti Singh did not listen to me and detained me in the police station.

After the complaint, Navneet Rana appeared before the Privileges Committee on 23 May and presented her side before it.

Now the Committee has to record the statements of Amravati Police Commissioner Dr. Arti Singh and Deputy Commissioner of Police Shashikant Satav.

Navneet Rana was elected in 2019 Lok Sabha election as an independent candidate with the support of NCP. But presently she and her MLA husband Ravi Rana are considered close to the BJP.
