Chennai institute launches non-invasive x-ray microscopy

Chennai: Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences in Chennai has launched the country’s first non-invasive x-ray microscopy for samples up to 300mm in size at extreme resolutions down to 60mm pixel size.

According to a statement on Wednesday, SKYSCAN 2214, which offers multistage x-ray nanotomography, covers the widest range of object sizes and spatial resolutions in a single instrument.

“This opens new and unique possibilities for 3D imaging and exact modelling of all types of biological samples, including mineralized tissues, soft tissues, plants, insects, paleontological samples, and many more types,” she said.

The institute said it is a completely non-invasive imaging technology for in-vitro and ex-vivo samples. “It is widely used for understanding and exploring material science samples. Invivo studies of small animals under sedated conditions can be done. This device can be used by medical, dental, pharmacology, architectural and engineering professionals,” it said.
