In December last year when Sukhmani Singh, an MNC employee and a resident of Lajpat Nagar, was looking for a way to get fuller cheeks before her wedding day, one of her friends suggested a visit to the dermatologist for cheek enhancement with fillers. After two session – one to understand the process and another for the procedure – she had her desired cheeks for her big day. Sukhmani is among the many young brides in the city who prefer getting fillers and similar dermatological treatments over the regular pre-bridal packages, which are expensive and the results only last a day. From correcting dark circles and under-eye bags to getting fuller lips and cheeks – brides are trying it all for their big day. While a few may have apprehensions about getting fillers, brides and brides-to-be tell us that if you are getting it done from the right dermatologist, there is no need to worry.

‘Three weeks before my wedding, I got my under-eye correction treatment done’
The brides and brides-to-be from NCR tell us that while it is a personal choice for some, others get it done because their husbands ask them to. Sushmita Singh Chakrobarty, a freelancer who is a resident of Sector 18, Noida, says, “I got married last November. Before marriage, when I was pursuing my MBA, everybody would assume that I was upset and that’s because I had under-eye bags. I am such a happy person otherwise but because of my dark circles, my face would look dull. Three weeks before my wedding, I got my under-eye correction treatment done. Before visiting the dermatologist, I had read everything about the treatment online and my doctor helped me understand what I was signing up for. My husband and in-laws didn’t know about the treatment, but it was important to get it done because I didn’t wish to look sad on my wedding day.”

Kajal Arora, a homemaker who lives in Sector 137, Noida, adds, “I got married last July. My husband’s friend’s wife had gotten a lip filler, so I thought of exploring the option. My lips did not have a definite shape earlier, and I think the treatment has actually helped me. It was expensive, but I like the results and might opt for it again. It is as normal as any other beauty treatment and anybody can go for it if they want to.”

The number of clients, primarily brides, increases by 60% in the wedding season
Dermatologists tell us that a lot of clients, primarily brides, visit their clinic for under-eye correction. “Under-eye treatment is most common among would-be brides. We get a 60-70% jump in the number of clients during the wedding season. When they meet us for a session, they tell us that people often assume that they are sad or tired because of their under-eye bags. Nobody wants to hear that on their wedding day. In some cases, their in-laws ask them to get this treatment done because they should not look sad or stressed in any way at their wedding functions,” says Neha Mittal, a dermatologist from Dermaworld Skin and Hair Clinic.
Prerna Taneja, a dermatologist from Clinic Eximus, adds, “There are some patients who don’t even tell their family members that they are getting the treatment done. They are too tired of people telling them that they look sad all the time because of their under-eye bags, and want it corrected.”

Cheek enhancement, perfect jawline and fuller lips – you name it and brides are doing it!
There are other treatments as well that would-be brides are exploring. “Earlier, people would not even think about getting a filler injected in their face, but this is a selfie generation and people want everything to look perfect while they are being clicked. There are times when our patients tell us that they wish to have a perfect jawline or lips, or have a double-chin removed. We help them through our technical assessment and show them how a body part is going to look after getting fillers injected. We divide the procedure in various sessions, so that there’s no drastic change all of a sudden. The idea is that it shouldn’t become too evident that the patient has gotten something changed on his/her face. They should rather get compliments! That is the trick of the procedure,” shares DJS Tulla, Plastic, Cosmetic and Hair transplant Surgeon, VLCC.
Sirisha Singh from The Skin Centre adds, “Many brides like to have fuller lips and cheeks for their wedding. Fuller lips make them look more photogenic and enhance their look in wedding pictures. High cheekbones often also reduce the hollowness under the eyes by lifting up the cheeks and hence make the eyes look less tired.”

Procedure can be expensive, but who is thinking about money?
Though the budget for such treatments can be really high, the brides are ready to spend any amount to look their best on their wedding day. These fillers can start anywhere between Rs 25,000 and Rs 30,000, depending on the quantity as well as the doctor they are getting the treatment from. “A filler treatment for lips may start from Rs 30,000 which can stay for 1.5 years or 18 months. But the price may change according to the quantity of the filler. 1ml may cost Rs 30,000, but if your treatment requires more than that, the price keeps exceeding depending on the procedure,” says Prerna Taneja.

Rohit Batra, a dermatologist from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, concludes, “Most of the brides know that the whopping amount they spend on their pre-wedding beauty packages might help them look beautiful for a day, but these treatments will last for over a year. So they prefer spending the money here.”
