New Delhi: The Union Health Ministry has asked states to also directly buy Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) from the suppliers onboarded on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal in addition to the supplies of PPEs being sent by the Centre.

ET has accessed a Health Ministry letter in this regard to all states last week in which it has been mentioned that a host of suppliers, whose PPE products have been approved by designated laboratories of the Ministry of Textiles and Defence Research Development Establishment (DRDE), are being onboarded by the Centre on the GeM portal. “Looking at the efforts being made by some states to procure PPEs, a need has been felt to facilitate states and central institutions in sourcing PPE coveralls directly. A large number of suppliers whose products have been approved are being onboarded on the GeM portal and any government entity can procure from them,” the Ministry has written. This is expected to be a quicker procurement process than of issuing tenders. “Each supplier on GeM has passed the quality standards prescribed by the Ministry of Health and has been given a Uniform Certification Code, the letter says.

The Ministry has said that to facilitate the private sector, the list of suppliers onboarded the GeM portal will be made available along with their contact details on the website of Ministry of Textiles and private entities like hospitals can approach them for supply of coveralls.

The letter says that the Centre has so far supplied about 28 lakh PPE coveralls and 84 lakh N95 masks to states. “Total orders placed by the Central government are for 2.2 Cr PPE overalls and almost 3 Crore N95 masks and it will continue to supply these items to states, broadly on the basis of Covid-19 case load,” the letter says. 100 suppliers are supplying PPE coveralls to the Centre at present through HLL Lifecare Limited at present. “They (the 100 suppliers) will continue to supply to HLL only. As and when the 100 suppliers of HLL complete their orders, they will also keep on getting added to GeM,” the letter says.
