Madurai: Two more medical colleges to offer PG in immunohaematology

Madurai: The Medical Council of India (MCI) on Monday approved a total five seats for MD Blood Transfusion and Immunohaemotology at the Madurai Medical College and Tirunelveli Medical College.

At present, only Madras Medical College in Tamil Nadu and a very few colleges across India are offering this course.

Two seats have been approved for Madurai Medical College, while three have been allotted for the Tirunelveli college.

“Blood transfusion courses are very rare with limited seats. One has to go to Chennai to pursue the course. It is good to see that the course will be available for more students from 2020, that too in Madurai,” resident medical officer of Government Rajaji Hospital, Dr Srilatha A said.

“It is a relatively new field. We will know of the demand once applications start coming in,” dean of Tirunelveli MCH, Dr M Ravichandran said.

Those completing this course can work in blood banks, treat those with haematological diseases, consult for providing blood transfusions at critical care units in hospitals, and assist in organ transplantations.

“Immunohaemotology is a growing field. It is the need of the hour as a lot is still unknown in the field of blood transfusion and there is a wide scope for research. People are opting for this course because of the latest advancements in treating haematological cases,” said Sowmiya A, a PG NEET aspirant.
