Mumbai: Wadia hospital unable to pay November salaries

MUMBAI: Grappling with a funds crunch due to non-payment of grants by the civic body, Parel’s Wadia Hospital has been unable to pay November salaries to employees. Operations at the trust-run hospital, that performs nearly 4,000 deliveries annually, may take a hit too.

BMC owes the hospital Rs 96.5 crore, of which Rs 13.6 crore was released on Friday.
“Most of that money will be used to pay salaries,” said Dr Minnie Bodhanwala, CEO of Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital for Children, adding that while Rs 10 crore was paid for the children’s hospital, Rs 3.7 crore was for Nowrosjee Wadia Maternity Hospital. Mayor Kishori Pednekar, who visited the hospital this week, met commissioner Praveen Pardeshi on Friday and approved Rs 13 crore.

After failure to pay salaries, the hospital put up a notice on November 28 that BMC had not released funds. Maternity and children hospitals, funded by BMC and state, have had fund issues for few years. The state government has dues of Rs 98 crore. Dr Bodhanwala said state payments too have been sporadic.

BMC manages staff salary and medicine expenses.
