Odisha: Part of syringe needle found inside 3-year-old Angul boy

ANGUL: The broken needle of a syringe was found inside the body of a three-year-old boy in the Madhapur community health centre (CHC) in the district on Thursday.

The needle had gotten stuck inside the child — Swayanjit Panda, son of Satyajit Panda, a resident of Mohankhali village under the Athamalik block — when he was administered an injection a month ago in the same health centre.

The father alleged that a nurse at the CHC had administered an injection to his son and held her responsible for the error. “My child complained of pain as a part of the needle got stuck inside him,” he said.

Poonam Hansda, the nurse, denied the allegation but confirmed administering an injection to him. Poonam said, “The patient must have taken an injection outside the hospital, where they may not have taken proper care while administering it.”

Though the needle was stuck in Swayanjit’s body for a month, the incident came to light two days ago after he felt a sharp pain. Swayanjit was taken to the CHC on Wednesday night and doctors on Thursday found a part of the needle stuck in his thigh and removed it.

Amarendra Nath Mohanty, chief district medical and public health officer (Angul), said the matter would be probed. “Anyone found guilty will face action,” he added.

Atanu Patnaik, doctor in-charge of the CHC, said, “We have removed the needle from inside the body of the boy and he is doing fine now. Though an injection was administered to the boy a month ago, his family has failed to provide the exact date on which he was given it.”
