Providing care to the elderly in a special way

Thiruvananthapuram: The Maruthoorkadavu Resident’s Welfare Association has taken a step forward for improving the lives of senior citizens in the area. As part of it, a consultative meeting was held to discuss the activities which will help in improving their social interaction, mental and physical health.

The meeting concluded with the idea of creating a special team to take care of them, the same way anganwadi workers take care of children.
Several activities will be carried out among the senior adults in the area.

The topic was presented by Dr K Vijayakuamr, former head of community medicine of Thiruvananthapuram Medical College and secretary of Health Action by people. As an initial phase of the programme, the activities, including installing handrails in the bathrooms of 400 houses in the residential area, creating small groups of people with the same interest to set up a platform for them to come together will be implemented.

The association will also pool volunteers to take care of bedridden patients who would visit them at regular intervals to understand their problems and encourage them to interact with the society. Besides providing training to use social media, proper health education and transportation facilities to hospital to those needed will be ensured for the senior citizens of the area.
