Chernin, Times Internet, Star tie up to end malaria by 2030

Not-for-profit Malaria No More, Times Internet and Star India have come together for a nationwide campaign to end malaria in India by 2030. The organisations plan to scale up the campaign in the same way India did for the eradication of polio.

“Three years ago, we started focussing on India for two reasons.

It is the fourth-largest malaria region in the world. We started seeing drug-resistant malaria in India. So we thought that if we did our job properly, we could start seeing a success story here,” said Chernin, co-founder of Malaria No More and CEO of the Chernin Group. “What I am looking to do is to meet the most effective people on the ground. We think the partnership with Abbott, Times and Star is meaningful,” Chernin added.

Times Internet is a media partner of the campaign. “We were inspired by the scale of this campaign and we want to do the same thing as we did for something like the Lost Votes. This is going to be a multimedia partnership,” said Satyan Gajwani, CEO of Times Internet.

“The scale of challenges India faces is so diverse and deep that whatever we do seems it is not enough,” said Uday Shankar of Star India. “I think Indian philanthropists too have changed, including corporates who are investing in their corporate social responsibility.”

Malaria No More is an advocacy-based not-for-profit organisation. It is working with the Odisha government to support India’s 2030 malaria-free goal. Its work involves demonstrating and disseminating innovative strategies and technologies, driving national advocacy to increase resources and political will, and mobilising financial resources and leadership from South Korea and Japan, in close partnership with the Global Fund.

Times Internet is part of the Times of India Group that publishes the Economic Times.
