Who is Neem Karoli Baba and why is he so famous?

Neem Karoli Baba, also known as Maharaj-ji, was a Hindu guru and devotee of Lord Hanuman.

Born Lakshman Narayan Sharma in the early 1900s, he left his comfortable home and became a wandering sadhu before returning to settle down and start a family. However, in 1958 he left home again and became known as Neem Karoli Baba after a strange incident on a train in the village of Neem Karoli.

Neem Karoli Baba is well known outside of India for spiritually guiding many Americans who visited that country during the 1960s and 1970s, including the famous Ram Dass and Bhagavan Das.
