What Indians purchased for the World Cup

Indians splurged on buying team jersey, cricket merchandise and books during the recently concluded cricket world cup with sales of these categories growing at a rapid pace, as per an analysis by ecommerce marketplace Flipkart.

Flipkart noted a three time spike in jerseys bought with overall demand for ICC and Team India merchandise shooting up before and during the tournament.

There was also a five time spike in searches for team jerseys in the women’s clothing category during the tournament apart from increase in demand for sunglasses, gym duffel bags and backpacks.

The study noted that apart from the tier one cities, cities like Patna, Jaipur, Coimbatore, Lucknow, Visakhapatnam, Trivandrum, Varanasi and Ranchi were frontrunners in driving demand for cricket bats this world cup season

Flipkart also noted that consumers who purchased a television had shown a bigger affinity for larger screen sizes such as 43-inches and bigger. Exchange offer adoption rose by 20% in Tier 3 and 4 markets, while no-cost EMI adoption went up in the metro and large markets by 25% for purchasing a television, the marketplace noted. And high definition televisions drove the demand.

The marketplace said a surprise category which picked up sales during the world cup was books on cricket and autobiographies.

This include biographies of former team India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and AB De Villers which were the most popular, especially in the northern and eastern region. Even official world cup titles like ‘ICC Cricket World Cup 2019’ and ‘England and Wales 2019: The Official Book’ sold good numbers which Flipkart attributed to Indians trying to get a real feel of what they could expect from the tournament.
