Scooter Braun says Taylor Swift's catalog acquisition could have been handled better

Taylor had tried to acquire the rights herself but was outraged by the Big Machine Music Group acquisition, stating that she had been blindsided by the deal. In a recent interview with NPR's Jay Williams, Scooter Braun said things could have been done differently.

The controversy

In November 2020, Taylor Swift revealed how her team had attempted negotiations with Scooter Braun. She didn't want to sign a document that would not allow her to speak her mind, and speak only positively of Scooter Braun. As Taylor says, Scooter never quoted a price to her team, and the strict demands did not allow the negotiations.

What does Scooter Braun say?

Scooter Braun says that he wasn't allowed to tell any artiste due to being under a strict NDA with the owner. He was genuinely excited to work with every artiste on the label and tried calling the artists. He regrets assuming every artiste would be willing to talk with me after the deal due to his intent and character.

Talking about the HYBE deal, he says he took 50 million of his own received stock and gave it to the employees and artists, and ensured that everyone involved had significant participation. He had called up several shareholders, like:

  • Kenny
  • Tommy Brown
  • Poo Bear
  • Justin Bieber
  • Ariana Grande and several others.
