Maruti Suzuki cuts production by 32.05% in March 2020

In the upscale utility vehicle segment, where Maruti Suzuki sells models like Vitara Brezza, Ertiga, XL-6, S-Cross, production number in March 2020 was 15,203 units, down from 17,719 units registered in March 2019. NEW DELHI: Owing to the fast-spreading Covid-19 virus and country-wide lockdown, India’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki took a 32 percent production cut in March with only 92,540 units rolled last month.
The company had manufactured 1,36,201 units during the same period a year ago, the company informed BSE.

The carmaker has cut production as many as 10 times in the last fiscal year to adjust dealer inventory and bear the burden of overflowing stock.

In the mini segment, where the company has models like Alto and S-Presso, it produced 17,630 units in March 2020, a shade above 17,439 units rolled out in the same month of last year.

The production number of compact models like WagonR, Celerio, Ignis, Swift, Baleno, Dzire was 50,078 units in March 2020, as against 81,163 units in the same month last year.

In the upscale utility vehicle segment, where Maruti Suzuki sells models like Vitara Brezza, Ertiga, XL-6, S-Cross, production number in March 2020 was 15,203 units, down from 17,719 units registered in March 2019.

Concurrently, the carmaker reported a year on year 47 percent decline in total sales (domestic and exports) at 83,792 units in the month of March 2020. The company had sold 158,076 units in March last year.

The carmaker said, "The sales during March 2020 are not comparable with sales in March 2019 due to the suspension of operations with effect from March 22, 2020, in line with national policy."

Exports in March too eroded by a higher 55 percent to 4,712 units as against 10,463 units in the corresponding month last year, the company said.
