Ovarian Cysts: 5 Warning signs you should recognize

Ovarian cysts , which are fluid-filled or solid sacs that develop within or on the surface of the ovary, are a common occurrence among women of reproductive age. In many cases, ovarian cysts go unnoticed and resolve on their own without causing any symptoms or complications. However, certain warning signs should not be ignored, as they could indicate a more serious issue requiring medical attention.
These sacs can be filled with fluid, blood, or other matter. While most cause no symptoms, larger cysts or those experiencing complications can present with noticeable signs.

Pelvic pain

One of the most common symptoms of ovarian cysts is pelvic pain. This pain can vary from dull and persistent discomfort to sharp, sudden pain. The location and intensity of the pain can depend on the size of the cyst and whether it has ruptured or caused the ovary to twist (a condition known as ovarian torsion).

Heaviness in the lower abdomen or pelvic area

Many women with ovarian cysts report a sensation of heaviness or pressure in their lower abdomen or pelvic area. This feeling may be more noticeable after physical exertion or during menstruation.

Changes in bowel or urinary habits

If a person experiences difficulty passing bowel movements or notice an increase in urinary frequency that is unrelated to other factors (such as increased fluid intake), it could be a sign of an ovarian cyst pressing on nearby organs and causing disruption.

Irregular or heavy menstrual periods

Dr. Tejal Deshmukh, Consultant: Gynecology, Manipal Hospital, Baner, Pune says, “Ovarian cysts can sometimes disrupt the normal hormonal balance, leading to irregular menstrual cycles or unusually heavy periods. If a woman notices sudden changes in her menstrual flow or pattern, it's important to investigate further.”

Severe pain during menstruation

While some discomfort during menstruation is normal for many women, persistent and severe pain during periods that do not respond to over-the-counter pain relief medication could be indicative of an underlying issue like ovarian cysts.

While most ovarian cysts pose no significant threat, being aware of the potential warning signs empowers women to seek timely medical attention if needed. Early diagnosis and management can prevent complications and ensure overall well-being. Regular checkups with the gynecologist are important for maintaining good reproductive health and identifying any potential issues early on.
