'Joker: Folie a Deux' fan theory about Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga's Joker and Harley Quinn plot adds 'INSANE' twist to trailer

With the release of the trailer for ' Joker: Folie a Deux ', Todd Phillips has unleashed a sequel that promises to push the boundaries of superhero adaptations. Riding on the success of its Oscar-winning success 'Joker' starring Joaquin Phoenix in the lead, this one sees Arthur Fleck joining forces with Lady Gaga 's Harley Quinn .

In a whirlwind of surreal imagery, the trailer hints at a tantalizing plotline as Phoenix's Joker encounters Gaga's Harley Quinn within the confines of Arkham Asylum . The flashing imagery shuttles audiences between the asylum, the chaotic streets of Gotham City and other dreamlike sequences, including what appears to be a sort of wedding between Joker and Quinn.

While the film is touted to be a musical, the 2-minute clip only featured moments of song and dance numbers in the film, but seemed to have held back on the tracks the Pop star would perform on-scree, adding to the intrigue around the film.

Following the trailer's release, fans took to social media to share their reactions, some of which have been listed below:

After the trailer launch, fans quickly began dissecting the trailer to try to decode the plot. One popular fan-theory that seemed to stand out was the reason for introducing the character Harley Quinn. Unlike DC lore, this Todd Phillips' version featured the character as an inmate of Archam, contrary to her role as an Arkham psychologist, who was highly qualified in psychoanalysis, criminology, and forensic psychiatry. This prompted one to ask, "Why does it feel like Harley is just Arthur’s fragment of imagination?"

Another asked, "Harley being a figment of Joker’s imagination just seems a little too obvious?"

While still another echoed similar feelings saying, "Finally Arthur found a woman who is not a product of his imagination (or did he?)"

Interestingly, Harley Quinn's introduction scene has her saying "I'm nobody," fuelling speculation that she may just be a figment of Arthur's imagination. Another fan pointed out the similarities between the shots of Joaquin in 'Joker' and Gaga in ' Joker 2 '. Besides sporting similar make-up, dishevelled hair and even similar dance moves, there seems to be very little that goes against this theory.

Others even noted that the musical soundtrack was much like the Wonka song 'Pure Imagination'. A fan even shared the popular song lyrics that read, 'Come with me and you will be/ In a world of pure imagination.'

Another noted, "The first 3 notes that sound in the trailer for #JokerFolieADeux are very similar to the first 3 that sound in "Close to You" (The Carpenters) and "Pure Imagination" (Wonka)."

The fact that Arthur's 'imaginary' love life was explored in 'Joker' with Zazie Beetz 's character of the neighbour, may indicate that the director would not likely go down that path again. However, it still could be an interesting option to explore in detail.

"I'll tell you what's changed. I'm not alone anymore," declares the Joker in a pivotal scene, further igniting speculation.

'Joker: Folie a Deux' will be released in cinemas on October 4.
