Sungjae made his debut as a vocalist in BTOB with "Insane" and "Imagine" on March 21, 2012. Then, on March 23, 2012, Yook co-hosted SBS MTV's music program The Show alongside his bandmate Lee Min-hyuk. In 2013, Yook Sungjae embarked on his first acting endeavor in the drama series Monstar, where he played a supporting role alongside fellow band members Lee Min-hyuk, Lee Chang-sub, and Im Hyun-sik. Sungjae portrayed the character Arnold, a member of the fictional boy idol group 'Men In Black'.
