Akshay Kumar breaks silence on Canadian citizenship: 'My films flopped so I thought of moving out'

Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar has often been on the receiving end of trolling owing to his Canadian passport and citizenship. He has been infamously nicknamed 'Canada Kumar', and now, the actor has finally opened up on the entire fiasco.

During an interaction with Lallantop, Akshay was quizzed about the reason for getting a Canadian passport.

He then revealed that a few years ago, several films of his tanked miserably at the box office, which prompted him to move out of the country.

"A few years ago, my films were not working. Almost 14-15 films had not worked so I thought I should probably move elsewhere and work there," he shared.

Adding that a friend who lives in Canada suggested him to move there, Akshay mentioned, "A lot of people move there for work, but they are still Indians. So I also thought that if destiny is not supporting me here then I should do something about it. I went there, applied for the citizenship, and got it."

However, Akshay had a change of heart after he tasted success in Bollywood once again, and he decided to stay back in India.

Akshay was recently declared as one of the highest tax-payers of India and was even awarded a certificate by the government. Addressing the same, the 'Airlift' actor said, "I have a passport. What is a passport? It is a document used to travel from one country to another. See I am an Indian, I pay all my taxes and pay them here. I have a choice to pay it there as well but I pay them in my country. I work in my country."

"A lot of people say things and they are allowed to. To them, I would just like to say that I am an Indian, and I will always be an Indian," he added.

Back in 2019, Akshay had also announced that he has applied for an Indian passport once again, and that it hurts him when people question his love for his country.

Meanwhile, on the film front, Akshay was recently seen in Aanand L Rai's 'Raksha Bandhan', which failed to impress the audience. While people demanded that the film be boycotted, a section of viewers also slammed it for promoting a 'regressive' story.
