Tecno Phantom V Flip review: For those who want an affordable flip phone

Tecno marked its entry in the foldable smartphone market with the launch of Tecno Phantom V Fold earlier this year. The company has now followed it up with its first flip phone in India. The Tecno Phantom V Flip is the most affordable foldable smartphone available in the market right now. The foldable smartphone offers premium looks and claims to deliver a lag free and smooth performance.
We used this latest offering from Tecno for sometime and here’s our complete review of the same.

Tecno Phantom V Flip is the first foldable smartphone of the company to come with a clamshell design. The smartphone comes in two colour options — Mystic Dawn and Iconic Black. We got the Mystic Dawn colour option which looks quite classy and elegant. The company also bundled a good-looking case with the smartphone which adds to its looks.

Tecno Phantom V Flip passes all the design standards of a flagship smartphone. The divided rear panel of the flip phone is covered with a layer of vegan leather. The smartphone has an aluminium frame which houses the hinge made of steel. The smartphone is quite sleek and light in weight when compared to other flip phones available in the market. The Tecno Phantom V Flip houses the SIM card tray on the left, whereas the power button and volume rockers are placed on the right side. You will find the USB Type C charging port placed at the bottom. The hinge of the smartphone has the Phantom branding. The rear panel also features a circular secondary display which is surrounded by bulky bezels which houses the rear camera and the LED flash. Unfolding the smartphone, you notice a literally ‘crease-free’ AMOLED display. The smartphone offers a firm grip and is also comfortable to use and hold with one hand.

The Tecno Phantom V Flip is a foldable smartphone which houses a 6.9-inch FHD+ display with 1080x2640 pixel resolution. The display offers variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz and 1000 nits of peak brightness. On the other hand, the flip phone also comes with a circular 1.32-inch AMOLED external display with 360x360 pixel resolution and up to 800 nits of peak brightness.

The external display on the Tecno Phantom V Flip sports very thick bezels which takes a lot of screen space. Also, the secondary screen does not support all the apps. The secondary screen primarily serves the purpose of displaying notifications and doubles as a selfie viewfinder.

Having said that, the main display of the smartphone works really well and it offers vibrant colour reproduction. The display also offers wide viewing angles which works while binge watching content. Also, another important thing to note is the crease of the screen. The company has worked on the screen crease and the crease is minimal and will not hamper the user experience. Also, the display comes with 1000 nits of peak brightness which offers good visibility under direct sunlight. The display on the foldable smartphone comes with variable refresh rate. The variable refresh rate enhances the user experience and it also helps in maintaining the battery life of the foldable smartphone. The smartphone also offers an auto switch feature which helps in maintaining the ideal refresh rate. Both the screens on the Tecno Phantom V Flip work well.

Tecno Phantom V Flip is powered by an octa-core MediaTek Dimensity 8050 chipset paired with 8GB of RAM. The foldable smartphone packs 256GB internal storage. The smartphone performed well during our testing and we did not notice any lag in the performance. The smartphone also comes with virtual RAM support which further enhances the performance of the foldable. The Tecno Phantom V Flip easily handles multitasking and we also did not encounter any heating issue while playing games on the foldable.

Coming to software, the Tecno Phantom V Flip runs Android 13 operating system topped with the company's own layer of HiOS 13.5. The smartphone comes with an always-on display option for the secondary screen. You can choose from different styles for the always-on display. The smartphone also comes with a software feature called Zero screen. The Zero screen functions as a platform that houses cards featuring suggested news, weather updates, quotes widgets, and an app usage widget. If you prefer, you have the option to deactivate the Zero screen in the 'Desktop settings.' By default, an app drawer is provided, allowing you to conceal all your downloaded apps and maintain a clean and organised home screen. Tecno's flip phone includes a Game mode featuring comprehensive settings, statistics, and parental controls. Additionally, it incorporates a Smart panel with side-slide shortcuts for convenient access.

Let’s quickly talk about the circular secondary display. You can swipe in all the four directions on the secondary display and access different things such as notifications, toggles for WiFi, Bluetooth and more. A right swipe unveils a choice of up to nine widgets, including weather, schedule, camera, vitality (fitness) rings, alarm, weather alerts, voice recorder, stopwatch, and timer. On the other hand, swiping left reveals the music controls.

Tecno Phantom V Flip sports a dual rear camera with 64MP main sensor with f/1.7 aperture and 13MP ultra wide camera with f/2.2 aperture. Front is home to a 32MP selfie shooter accompanied by an LED flash. You also control the camera on the Tecno Phantom V Flip from its secondary display. You can also view previews of the captured images on the cover screen of the foldable smartphone.

During our testing, the Tecno Phantom V Flip delivered a quite satisfactory performance. The smartphone comes with a clean and easy to use camera app. The shutter button is placed in the centre and right side has the camera flip option and a dedicated Google Lens button. The left has the shortcut to the photo gallery. The top bar of the app houses the settings, flash, AI and other shooting options.

Coming to the image quality, the main camera on the Tecno Phantom V Flip manages to capture some really good and sharp images. The images also managed to capture the right amount of detailing on many occasions. The images captured during daylight were better as compared to the images captured in the night. A lot of noise was visible in the images taken during night. Apart from this, the main camera performed quite well and it also delivered some really nice portrait shots. On the other hand, the ultrawide camera aims to integrate the main camera's output to enhance the sharpness and development of the central portion. Undoubtedly, the photos captured with this camera exhibit the sharpest central focus we've observed in a while, boasting impressive quality, sharpness, dynamic range, and vibrant colours.

The 32MP selfie camera also delivered pretty satisfactory shots and you can easily capture some really nice selfies.

Tecno Phantom V Flip is backed by a 4000 mAh battery. The smartphone also comes with 45W fast charging support. During our testing the smartphone managed to offer up to 15 hours of battery life on a single charge. The smartphone also comes with some battery saving modes which can offer slightly extended battery life. The advantage of the foldable smartphone is the presence of fast charging support. The smartphone can charge completely within 45 minutes with the help of 45W fast charging. In all the Tecno Phantom V Flip delivers satisfactory performance in the battery department.

Tecno Phantom V Flip comes with a price tag of Rs 54,999, which makes it the most affordable foldable smartphone available in the market. The smartphone sports an elegant design and delivers a smooth and lag free performance.
