Apple to EU: This is why we should not be forced to adopt standard charging tech

NEW DELHI: Recently, it was reported that European Union has proposed plans to adopt a universal connector for smartphone charging cables across different political regions. If the plan is approved then Apple would be forced to ditch its Lightning port.

Now, Apple has responded to this issue and the company is not really happy with the idea.

As reported by Cult of Mac, Apple has said that adoption of standardized connector would stifle innovation. The company also added that it believes in innovation and it deeply cares about customer experience.

The Cupertino-based tech giant also feels that passing such legislation "would disrupt the lives of millions of customers in Europe due to a lack of incompatibility." This will also lead to the creation of huge volume of electronic waste as over 1 million devices have already been shipped with Lightning cable. The company also added, "this move will also harm the economy as a whole."

Apple also adds that presently this move is totally futile as the industry is already moving towards a standardised solution of Type C port.

Some rumours also suggest that Apple is planning to totally ditch all the physical connectors. It is believed that by 2021 the company will do away with all the ports from iPhone 13 Pro Max. This will in turn compel the buyers to purchase wireless chargers instead of the typical cable.

The European Union will finally release the results by the end of this month. Apple believes the “Commission will continue to seek a solution that does not restrict the industry’s ability to innovate.”
