5 Engineering careers: Salary and jobs

Engineering is the art of applying scientific and mathematical principles, experience, judgment, and common sense to make things that benefit people. Engineers design bridges and important medical equipment as well as processes for cleaning up toxic spills and systems for mass transit. The five largest engineering areas are:

Chemical engineers
Combine engineering and chemistry principles to study the production and uses of chemicals in a wide range of practical applications. For example, it is often a chemical engineer who works on improving food-processing techniques or developing better fertilizers.

Civil engineering
Civil engineering professionals design, construct and maintain society's infrastructure buildings, bridges, roads, airports, dams, water supplies and environmental systems. With the intricacy involved in creating and updating infrastructure designs and projects, civil engineers must take into account not only construction costs but project completion time, government regulations and potential environmental hazards, such as earthquakes and hurricanes.

Electrical engineering
If you want to be on the cutting edge of new technological development, electrical engineering may be the career for you. Whether it's a motor for the latest electric car, a navigation system used in GPS devices, or a wind turbine power system for efficient energy production, an electrical engineer was involved in its design and manufacture.

Industrial engineers
Typically work in manufacturing facilities, making sure that organizations produce their products as efficiently, cost effectively and safely as possible. Some industrial engineers are involved in designing production processes and factory-floor layout schemes. Others address work site or product safety and health issues so that both workers and the consuming public are protected.

Mechanical engineers
Design tools, engines, electrical generators, internal combustion engines, elevators, In short, any device that is mechanical in nature.
