Selecting a career is one of the biggest decisions you will ever make. It will affect where you live, how much you make and the lifestyle you will enjoy. So you want to choose a career that is best suited to meet your expectations, needs and long-term goals. Here are some common mistakes people usually commit while choosing a career. Not taking enough timeGood decisions are made by taking ample amount of time. With good peace-of-mind and solitude to look at different options, a person is able to make the right career choice. Plan in advance of what you want to do. The very first step is to list down the things you are interested in doing. It is necessary to assess your own personal characteristics ie your skills and interests, your likes and dislikes, your strengths and weaknesses. When you match this, you will be able to get closer to your career goal.Failing to understand what is best for youFor most people figuring out their purpose in life and their dream career can be a simple and easier process while for others it may take a lifetime. Setting goals and just believing in them do not always work for everyone, which is why it is important to know who you are and where you want to be in life before deciding on your dream career. So try to understand what works best for you, don't get swayed by predictions of industry trends, career counsellors, aptitude tests, parental expectations or peer pressure. It is good to take advice from people but don't let them dictate terms to you.

Not considering locationJobs in certain occupations are concentrated in specific cities - New York or Los Angeles for example - or in certain types of locations - such as cities versus rural areas. If you live somewhere that doesn't offer many opportunities in your field and you aren't willing to relocate, you will have trouble getting a job.Don't follow in someone else's footstepsIt's not uncommon for someone to go into the same occupation as their parents', and it's not uncommon when they do they eventually find their occupation unsatisfying. Your father may have been an attorney. Your father's father may have been an attorney. But you can be whatever you want - and you should. Money being the deciding factorThis is one mistake majority of us do. People always prefer money over interests and doing something you actually like. Money is very important factor for everyone and hence it might be important to earn some before you actually follow your passion.

Don't limit your options to a "Best Careers" listLists that tell you what careers have the best opportunities of the year, decade or whatever, can be a helpful guide when it comes to selecting a career. However, making a decision based solely on one of those lists is a terrible idea. Even an occupation with a great outlook can be a bad fit, so you have to scratch below the surface to find out whether you and a career are a good match.Don't jump in blindOne of the biggest mistakes anyone can make is not doing their homework before heading down a specific career path. Yes, you may stand to make a lot of money if you become an entrepreneur, but if you do your research, you will find out that most entrepreneurs never hit it big, they have long work weeks and many sleepless nights thinking about how they're going to make payroll and keep the business afloat. Don't choose an occupation until you are thoroughly familiar with what it entails. You need to learn everything you can about any career you are serious about.
