Gurugram may be touted as the Millenium City, but crimes against women do not seem to be stopping at all. This is something that the Haryana government itself has accepted.
According to statistics tabled in Haryana’s assembly on Wednesday, National Capital regions of Gurugram and Faridabad have topped the table in overall crime rate against women in the state.
3,768 in Gurugram and 3,440 in Faridabad sexual assault cases against women was recorded between August 2014 and September 2018, the Times of India reported. 555 cases of rape and 2,308 cases of molestation and kidnapping against women and girls were recorded in Gurgaon alone.
Similarly, in Faridabad 352 cases of rape were registered in the same period while the figures for kidnapping and molestation have touched 1,656 cases so far. Overall, the state has a total of 37,161 cases registered during the past four years.
Gohana MLA Jagbir Singh Malik had questioned in the assembly if crimes against women had seen any decline in the last few years. He had also questioned the credibility of women police stations in curbing crime against women, which is why the data was presented in the assembly.
The crime showed an increase in the number of rapes cases over the years. Since August 2014 to September 2015, Haryana saw 961 rape cases. However, the state government admitted to the fact that districts that sheltered women police stations had shown a decline in the number of offences.
Haryana DGP B S Sandhu told TOI that there was an increase in the number of cases against women because all women complaints had been converted into cases. He further claimed that the police officials had busted 47 gangs in the state.
Congress legislature party (CLP) leader Kiran Choudhry though blamed the state policemen’s lethargic attitude for the same adding, “There is no doubt that Haryana is not a safe place for women. All that is happening is against the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ slogans. We have seen the incidents in which the girls have even been forced to end their lives.”
