A whole bunch of people had gathered together, everyone was rejoicing and some were even bursting firecrackers to celebrate the moment. There were slogans, laughter and an overwhelming relief. What were these people celebrating?
Sounds weird doesn’t it? A whole bunch of people got together to celebrate the execution of Ted Bundy, one of the history’s most notorious criminals. Given that even the most heartless people often find themselves more empathetic when it comes to death, it really needs to be known what exactly Bundy did that made gathered him so much hate.
And on the face of it, it would seem strange that a person like Bundy would be involved in any crime at all. He was a well-educated and well-spoken man well on his way to becoming a lawyer. An active part of his social communities, people often recount that Bundy was a well-dressed man who had a way with words. But, then what happened?
Born to an unwed mother with his father’s identity not known, Bundy was primarily raised by his grandparents. He discovered that his paternal parentage was not known into his teens and many often blame his actions on this. However, even after finding that he was all illegitimate child and finding himself stuck in an emotional crisis, Bundy didn’t go astray when it came to academics. He went on to study Psychology during his undergraduate years and even work with a suicide helpline centre. He would also go on to work with political parties for election campaigns, something that won him excellent recommendations from well-placed political workers when it came to enrolling himself for law school.
Everything seemed to be going well. In fact, he also had romantic relationships. Though, many are also of the view that the dark crimes he was to commit was a result of his very first relationship with a girl he met at college while studying Psychology. She broke his heart by ending the relationships. However, this didn’t deter him from having other relationships. While everything seemed to be going well for Bundy, there were reports of several women going missing from different areas across the US. There were eyewitness reports of a young man who’d be last seen with the victims, but no one knew he was. From all the information gathered, the police did have Ted Bundy on their list, but no real reason to look into him because of his spotless track record.
America was to discover true horror when a couple of trekkers found decomposing body parts on a trail they were going through. When the police reached, they found more body parts indicating that multiple people were buried at the same spot. Soon, a pattern could be established and America knew that a serial killer was on the run. Through the help of one of Ted Bundy’s potential victim who escaped, the police got a sketch but the final push came when Ted’s own girlfriend called the police after looking at the sketch, asking them to look into her boyfriend.
As more witnesses were questioned and evidence gathered, it became clear what Ted’s modus operandi was. He would pose as a man in crutches, lure women into helping him with his car and later, sexually assault them and at times, even mutilated their bodies only to murder them in gruesome ways. He was responsible for the death of over 30 women in the same fashion but these are the ones he was convicted of while many say that the count could have been up to 100. In fact, it was later that Ted himself admitted that he also committed necrophilia by often going and lying with the bodies of the women he had killed. At times, he would apply makeup on them and dress their hair. He severed and preserved 12 of his victims’ heads.
In fact, his desire to kill was so strong that even when he was in jail, he managed to escape and went on a killing spree. He ended up killing four young women in a span of fifteen minutes. One of them had broken bones, one had a broken skull, one’s nipple was ripped off along with a bloody bite mark on her buttock and one of them was violated using a hair mist bottle. After this, he went on to kidnap a 12-year-old and murdered her. He was caught with great difficulty given his excellent ability to hide himself and commit crimes leaving behind very little evidence.
It was this ability that made it very difficult for the police authorities to convict him. However, it was the bite mark on one of his victims that was used to prove that he was, indeed, a killer. He was so cold-blooded that throughout his time in jail, he didn’t once admit to the killings except for speaking about them two days before his death, which many assume was a ploy by him to extend the date of his execution. To think that he spent fourteen years in jail and majority of them as a convicted murderer, but never showed any sort of guilt for his crimes sends shivers down one’s spine. Many psychologists are of the view that he was a sociopath given that he didn’t have it in him to feel remorse for his actions. A highly twisted individual, even his psychiatrist at one of the jails where he served time would often joke about how Bundy tried to manipulate him.
At first look, one could never imagine Ted Bundy could be such a demon who preyed on young women and cut short their lives. Even while he was being tried for murder, he’d come to court dressed up in coat and pants. He, in fact, represented himself and fought his own case given his legal knowledge. Maybe he did know the gravity of what he had done but was in denial given the fact that he could admit to all his crimes while talking to a journalist but in the third person. However, there was a very dark side to him that no one can deny. He was the one that broke a person’s definition of a criminal. A criminal, clearly, could come right from the middle of all of us. They’re intelligent people who just choose to use their mental ability for gruesome crimes.Ted Bundy was a sick, vile person who taught us that criminals could come from the very unlikely places but deserve to be punished.
