It’s Diljit’s World, and we are all just living in it. The Punjabi singer-actor has been on global takeover for the past year. Next up on his list is the Imitiaz Ali Directorial, Chamkila. This movie about the life, journey, and death of a famous record-breaking artist, Amar Singh Chamkila, is highly anticipated. Ever since the announcement was made for the film and the first look was released, fans have been waiting to see a full trailer. The wait is finally over, as Netflix released the first trailer of Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra starrer Chamkila, and we are breaking down our first thoughts below.

Diljit is everywhere, and the Punjabi pop star has been ruling the charts for the right reasons. With significant music releases with artists like Sia and Sawtiee, his recent performance with singer Ed Sheeran has also been the talk of the town. His upcoming release, Chamkila, is highly anticipated.

Imtiaz Ali’s Chamkila is the story of the famous Punjabi singer of the 1960s, Amar Singh Chamkila. The record-breaking artist was also a controversial figure because of the subject matter of his songs. Chamkila wrote and sang songs with his wife Amarjyot, whom Chopra played in the film.

This 2-minute 37-second trailer takes on a whirlwind journey of Chamkila’s life, his fame, and the hate behind it. Diljit Dosanjh stars as the protagonist that we love to hate. Pulling his weight in the movie, Dosanjh dons a new look and appears without a turban for the first time halfway through the trailer.

The short preview carefully treads the water and lines without revealing the story. With witty one-liners and soul-stirring music, Diljit embodies the role of Amar Singh Chamkila to the tea. What follows is a concoction of humor, fear, sadness, and ambition. Imtiaz Ali’s stuffiness comes across every season in this small glimpse of the movie.

We also see Parineeti Chopra as Amarjyot, but we do not hear a single word from her throughout the trailer. The trailer’s USP and what fans hope will translate into the movie is the charm of an AR Rahman music score and palette.

It also seems as if Diljit had been preparing all his life for his role because, very much like Chamkila, Dosanjh came up from the same humble beginnings. But their style of writing and creating songs could not be more different. Director Imtiaz Ali has a lot of riding on this project, and his passion comes through.

Story Behind Chamkila

Meanwhile, Amar Singh Chamkila rose in popularity because of hit songs. Opinions about the singer ranged between the South Pole and the North Pole. While some people loved him, many hated his guts as well.

His songs were populist and often addressed subject matters like drugs, alcohol, and affairs. He was criticized for creating boyish songs with filtered meaning. Nobody questioned his talent, but they did question his intent behind it. The singer was killed at the young age of 27.

The story of Amar Singh Chamkila is an untold one. However, with a promising trailer like this and the combined geniuses of Imtiaz Ali and AR Rahman, this could be the introduction of the magnificent artist Chamkila to the new generation.

The movie starts streaming on Netflix on April 12, worldwide.
