Maska Review: What’s It About? And How’s The Screenplay?

A teenage Parsi boy and Mr. Firozsha Bagh of his high school, Rumi starts having Bollywood dreams when one of his mom’s friend tell her that he can be an actor. Seeking inspiration from Boman Irani, he is so smitten by the idea of being a Bollywood actor that he leaves his house at Colaba and moves into a flat at Aram Nagar, Andheri along with his girlfriend. All this while, his mom is totally against the idea because she wants him to continue the legacy of his family by managing the iconic Rustom Cafe.

There he continues to give auditions every day but no success. Then he meets a director who is struggling for funds to get his dream feature film rolling. He is also equally desperate for funds and is willing to cast anyone as a lead hero who produces the film.

No points in guessing, our hero goes back to his house and tells his mom that he is willing to manage the Rustom Cafe now. However, secretly he is planning to sell it so to manage a role in the film.

Maska brings the same age-old story of a guy stuck between his and family’s dreams but it works because it has been modernised and has been given a realistic touch. The ‘dish’ is old but the ‘tadka’ is fresh which makes it still enjoyable.

Even though an ordinary story, the screenplay keeps you with it thanks to some light and charming moments. The whole track of Rumi with his dad Rustom Irani is entertaining. If it makes you laugh at several junctures, it gives you a heartwarming sensation as well. The whole Law Of Attraction angle makes the screenplay and drama believable.

The track between Rumi and Persis is also written well. Although the screenplay is highly predictable, you have to catch some little details and metaphors to enjoy the drama and to know, “why is happening, what is happening”.

However, I didn’t like the way writers have exaggerated the drama unnecessarily. For instance, the whole idea of Rumi cheating his mom when there was no need for it. Whatever the message writer wanted to give, he could’ve given if instead of selling the cafe by cheating, Rumi just asked for help from his mom. I don’t know what special purpose this cheating served in the story. It was simply weird and doesn’t make you relate to the hero. Also, I didn’t relate to the attitude of Rumi’s parents about him having ‘casual s*x’. More than casual it was irresponsible. It comes out as if they don’t care at all. There are some really good dialogues in the film, I don’t know why couldn’t writers think of better words in such situations. The hookup point of Rumi and Persis has also been written far from perfectly.

Maska Review: How Are The Performances & Direction?

Manisha Koirala is a heart winner in the film. I don’t know if the makers have got her stereotype the Parsi accent or not but she looks cute as the Parsi mother. Her accent, hand gestures and expressions are perfectly in sync and it’s such a treat to see her on screen.

Javed Jaaferi gives another excellent performance. Though he has a limited role, he does it very well. The actor has also got some really nice one-liners, one of them being, “gravity is a myth, the earth sucks”. It really cracked me up.

Prit Kamani as the lead hero is good and looks charming. Shirley Setia looks cute and acts naturally. Nikita Dutta is also very good. She was impressive as we last saw in Kabir Singh in a small role. This time she has got bigger part and she does well. She’s also good with Hindi-Punjabi accent.

Neeraj Udhwani has made his directorial debut with this show and he has managed to give the audience a feel-good film. The presentation is good and the way he has fetched good performances even from young stars is worth appreciation.

Maska Review: Final Verdict

In these times when all we see is disturbing news on social media, a film like Maska is a relief. Avoiding a few problems, you must watch it because it will make you happy. Also those who couldn’t understand Imtiaz Ali’s Ranbir Kapoor & Deepika Padukone starrer Tamasha perfectly and generally misunderstand the meaning of dreams. THIS ONE IS FOR YOU.
