Suffering from as weak as a kitten plot, the story starts with our leading lady Anie (Athiya Shetty) groom-hunting someone who can get her out of the country. Just because she wants to brag about this on her social media, she rejects tens of people despite everyone falling for her beauty. On the other hand, we’ve Pushpender (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), who has just returned from Dubai and is also looking for a bride.
Coincidentally, they both are neighbours and somehow meet each other. Anie finds his overseas ticket in Pushpender and he finds a way to earn legal sex. But, both of them have lied to get to each other and what will happen next is the rest of the film.
Debamitra Hassan’s story manages to hang on a thin thread but not for long. The main issue of ‘getting married to go overseas’ starts losing its novelty very soon. It surely is inspired by the real events, but the reality might really be boring at times. Though the one-liners evoke laughter in some scenes, the rest of them are boring drag leaving you clueless about what’s happening on-screen.
The simplicity works in the favour of the film & makers have tried to keep it as authentic as they can. Both the adjoining houses shown in the film has the real flavour and look beautiful. The major issue of the film is, you can’t savour one hold thing for the entire film. This required strong humour & an emotional connect, both are missing from the script.
Motichoor Chaknachoor Movie Review: Star PerformanceNawazuddin Siddiqui sleepwalks during the film. We’ve known him from great performances & when someone such as him does this, even average turns out to be bad. He seems disinterested & hence isn’t convincing as his character at all.
Athiya Shetty gets the accent on-point and she has delivered a well-prepared performance. The efforts of understanding her character are pretty visible through her act. From the supporting cast, Abhishek Rawat who plays Nawazuddin’s brother is the most impressive & most underutilized character of all. Vibha Chibher & Navni Parihar are just about okay. They couldn’t even come close to the bar set by Seema Pahwa or Sheeba Chaddha.
Motichoor Chaknachoor Movie Review: Direction, MusicThe best thing about director Debamitra Biswal is that she has amazing sync with her cinematographer. She treats her camera as yet another character in the film & makes its optimal use to escalate a few comical scenes. Overall, it’s routine stuff and nothing fancy which also helps the simple setting of the film.
Not a single song works in the favour of the film. Crazy Lagdi is the most hummable of all but that too leaves no impact. Abhijit Vaghani’s background score is good at places, as he uses the sound to match it with the comical sequences happening on screen.
Motichoor Chaknachoor Movie Review: The Last WordAll said and done, Motichoor Chaknachoor follows the formula of films like Badhaai Ho, Bareilly Ki Barfi & Dream Girl but misses the most important element they had – strong humour.
Two and a half stars!
