* The day before Good Friday is known as Maundy Thursday.

The term “Maundy” is derived from the Latin word mandatum (commandment). The term refers to the commandment given by Jesus at the Last Supper: “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.”

* Good Friday is also known by several other names, such as Easter Friday, Great Friday (in the Russian Orthodox Church), and Holy Friday. Another name was even was thought to stem from the German, “Gottes Freitag” or “God’s Friday”. Although it may seem odd that such a sad event would be granted a name like “Good Friday,” Christian adherents believe that Jesus’s sacrifice for the eternal life of humanity is ultimately a positive message.

* Good Friday is often referred to as Black Friday, which is observed before Resurrection Day. Some people believe the term Good Friday is probably the remainder of what was once called God’s Friday.

* Good Friday is observed during Holy Week as part of the Paschal Triduum (or the three days) on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday. Catholics are not supposed to consume meat on Good Friday. They can have one complete meal or two smaller ones on this day.

The most fascinating thing about Good Friday is that it’s much older than the celebration of Christmas. Even in the Bible, there is no mention of the day of Jesus’ birth but it does specify crucifixion.
