The Bahamas is a tropical destination that many people dream of visiting. It is well known for its warm beaches and amazing marine wildlife, but it has much more to offer. Here is a list of some of the best ways to make the most of your time there.
* Atlantis Resort, Paradise Island
The first decision you will have to make is where to stay—Atlantis is not just a resort, but it’s also a water park and a marine habitat. While staying here you will have access to a variety of water slides in an area over 141 acres (57 hectares). On top of that, it is also the world’s largest open-air marine habitat, housing over 50,000 marine animals in 15 exhibit lagoons. Other notable attractions are an ocean-side golf course, a full spa, a yacht and fishing charters. Lastly, it is located on Paradise Island, this island is a connected to the Capital of the Bahamas via two bridges. You will be minutes away from a large variety of shopping outlets and have full access to the Paradise Island beach where the majority of the water sports activities take place.
* Dolphin Encounters
This is the type of experience most people envision when they think of The Bahamas. Dolphin Encounters is a marine habitat, with trained dolphins that perform for and interact with visitors. The dolphins do diving tricks, raise and hold their bodies out of the water and will even give out kisses to tourists. You will have opportunity swim with them, take pictures, feed them and get a full appreciation for just how smart and friendly they are.
* Water Sports
These activities take full advantage of the ocean surrounding the islands. Water sports includes a number of activities such as jet skiing, parasailing, banana boat riding and snorkelling. One of most amazing features of the archipelago are its coral reefs, which are home to hundreds of different fish species—snorkelling will give you an opportunity to get within reaching distance of all of the animals. Fortunately for visitors, there are several companies that combine all of these into a convenient package. They will provide you with the equipment, transportation and supervise you to make sure you’re safe the whole time.
* Conch Salad
This is the most famous and celebrated local dish in the Bahamas. Conch salad is made from a marine mollusc that lives inside a large spiral shell. This shell has become quite famous and grown to be associated with the Caribbean. The salad is made using the meat inside shell—cut up and served with a mix of other vegetables and seasonings. You should definitely try this dish before leaving the island, the best version can be found at Arawak Cay Fish Fry.
* Pirates of Nassau Interactive Museum
The idea of piracy has been popularized by movie series such as Pirates of the Caribbean, but it was in fact a very real period in Caribbean history. The ‘Golden Age of Piracy’ lasted from about 1690 to 1720 and heavily affected The Bahamas as its capital, Nassau, hosted the largest concentration of pirates of any Caribbean island. Visitors can see how pirates where executed, the type of weapons they used and learn about some of the most favorite pirate legends. I especially recommend it if you have young children traveling with you as they tend to enjoy the role playing.
