Asda supermarket quietly slashes petrol and diesel prices this week, RAC fuel watch says

A popular supermarket has quietly slashed the prices of its petrol and diesel this week.

In a surprising move, that was not advertised, leading supermarket Asda has dropped the cost of both its petrol and diesel.

Asda is now charging an average of 153.5p for petrol, while its customers are paying 176.7p for diesel - which is around 2p less than its rivals.

This means that, on average, the grocer has dropped petrol rates by 4.5p. Meanwhile, diesel prices have slashed by around 5.5p.

According to the RAC's fuel watch, the cost of fuel at the supermarket chain started dropping two days ago.

This comes following the motoring group's urges to Big Four retailers (Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda and Morrisons) to drop their fuel rates by at least 5p, as it was not reflecting wholesale savings.

They are now pushing for the other three store's to catch up.

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: "Our data shows that, without advertising the fact, Asda has taken an average of 4.5p off the cost of litre of unleaded across its 320 sites in the last two days, and around 5.5p off diesel.

"While we’re pleased one major supermarket retailer has finally started heeding our calls to pass on the enormous drop in the wholesale prices of both fuels, the fact these price cuts have been made so quietly is surely admission that they should have come much sooner."

Speaking about the move, a spokesperson for Asda said: "Asda is the price leader in the supermarket fuel sector and we remain focused on providing our customers with the best value at the pumps."

Earlier this week, the cheapest place to shop for a trolley's worth of groceries in November was revealed by the Consumer choice experts at Which?.

Aldi and Asda were named the most cost-efficient places to do the food shop that consisted of around 48 popular groceries.

The experts reported that a basket of groceries at Aldi cost £77.21 on average in November while the same purchases at Waitrose would put consumers back £104.11.

Which? also looked at trolley prices by comparing the costs of 149 items. Asda won out, continuing its winning streak that started back in January 2020.

It cost £355.34 on average at Asda for the larger shop, beating the next cheapest, Sainsbury's, by £11.49.
