BBC EastEnders' Callum Highway's new romance 'rumbled' after Ben Mitchell's departure

EastEnders viewers suspect that Callum Highway could have new love interest on the show soon and some are hoping that it won't be newly-returned Johnny Carter.

There's speculation that Callum (played by Tony Clay) could be heading for a new romance following the departure of his husband Ben Mitchell (

Max Bowden). Callum was left heartbroken last month when Ben ended up being arrested.

Ben was revealed to have committed credit card fraud abroad last year and he was later sent back to the US. His family, including parents Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) and Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), have been devastated. The character has since been sentenced to six years in prison.

His husband Callum, prior to Ben's extradition, vowed to wait for him and promised that he would remain faithful whilst he serves his sentence abroad. However, some fans suspect that Callum could soon embark on a new romance.

Some viewers believe that he could end up with Johnny Carter (Charlie Suff), particularly after the BBC show posted photo of the two actors on set together. Cast member Charlie was seen with his finger over his lips in the photo of the pair that was shared with fans on Instagram recently. However, other fans are convinced that Callum could start a romantic relationship with Felix Baker (Matthew Morrison). The latter made his debut on the show in 2022 and is said to have become a firm favourite with viewers since then.

A number of fans recently discussed the prospect of Callum developing a new romance in a thread on Reddit. Several people suggested that it could be Felix that the character becomes romantically linked to on the soap opera. One person speculated: "While I do think it's a strong possibility they'll pair up Callum and Johnny, my guess it could be Callum and Felix. But I suspect they won't be 'official' for many months down the road."

Another is said to have added in the thread: "Why can't he be with Felix?" A third fan is quoted as having said: "It should be poor Felix." Yet another voiced support by reportedly saying: "I actually really like the idea of Felix and Callum."

There have been similar sentiments shared on X, formerly known as Twitter. One person wrote: "I would rather see Callum [with] Felix if we /must/." Someone else reportedly suggested in a tweet: "Callum and Felix or Johnny & Felix."

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday each week at 7.30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Previous episodes are available through the streaming platform.
