Full list of 10 most dangerous cities in the world - with 5 in the same country

Brits planning their summer holiday destinations might want to take a peek at the ten cities across the world that are said to be the most dangerous before visiting a travel agent.

Mexico might offer everything a tourist wants from a break including clear crystal waters and sunshine, but there are plenty of places within the country best avoided.

The UK’s foreign office advises all but essential travel to several regions of the country where violence is rife.

The country is blighted by cartel related violence, which is now being felt in beach resorts such as Cancun, where tourists once felt safe. An analysis carried out by the website worldpopulationreview.com lists the ten most dangerous cities in the world - all of which are in just three countries.

Topping the list is Mexico with five cities, while Brazil is a close second with three and Venezuela with two. The ten most dangerous cities in the world and their murder rates are:

1. Los Cabos, Mexico (111.3 deaths per 100,000)

2. Caracas, Venezuela (111.2 deaths per 100,000)

3. Acapulco, Mexico (107.0 deaths per 100,000)

4. Natal, Brazil (102.6 deaths per 100,000)

5. Tijuana, Mexico (100.8 deaths per 100,000).

6. La Paz, Mexico (84.8 deaths per 100,000)

7. Fortaleza, Brazil (83.5 deaths per 100,000)

8. Ciudad Victoria, Mexico (83.3 deaths per 100,000)

9. Ciudad Guyana, Venezuela (80.3 deaths per 100,000)

10. Belem, Brazil (71.4 deaths per 100,000)

It comes as last month a British man was found dead in a pool of blood in his hotel room in the Mexican resort of Cancun and his wife beside him with cuts to her arms. Detectives raced to the scene after the alarm was raised at a city hotel just after 5am local time.

Initial unconfirmed reports pointed to a possible crime of passion. Local prosecutors said in their first official comments an investigation is still ongoing but they are currently treating the incident as a possible suicide pact which ended with only the husband taking his own life.

The 58-year-old British tourist found dead is said to have been discovered with a broken bottle between his legs and blood around the room as well as on his arms and chest.

His 53-year-old wife was taken to hospital with multiple cuts to her arms amid unconfirmed reports she may have been under the effects of an unknown substance. Sources close to the ongoing investigation said she had now been released and the cuts were not “deep ones”.
