Giant 'UFO-like' spinning ice disk leaves residents of small town baffled

A giant 'UFO-like' disk of ice on a river has left residents in a small US town baffled.

The bizarre phenomenon has been likened to a crop circle or a giant UFO landing on the water.

The naturally occurring ice circle, believed to be 100 yards wide, has been attracting onlookers from far and wide to the Presumpscot River in Westbrook, Maine, USA.

Doug Bertlesman, who works in a building overlooking the water, said the bizarre formation is "wild".

He told the Press Herald: "It kind of looks like a crop circle. It’s pretty wild to look at.

“It’s certainly not every day that you can watch a spinning circle of ice in the river."

Rob Mitchell, who owns a nearby office building, was one of the first to spot the circle on Monday.

He said: "There were ducks sitting on it.

"The ducks were rotating on this big Lazy Susan. It was a big duck-go-round.

"It’s stuck right there. It’s not going anywhere. I think it will continue to gain in thickness as long as it keeps spinning.”

Mark Battle, an associate professor of physics at Bowdoin College in Brunswick told the Press Herald he’s never seen anything like the ice disk.

He explained attributed the disk’s movement to the river current, the thickness of the ice, and to the friction caused by the ice grinding against the shoreline.
