Two prisoners at HMP Lewes 'fighting for life' as 15 fall unwell following reports of poisoning

Emergency services raced to a prison in East Sussex this afternoon after receiving reports of at least 10 casualties.

The poisoners are understood to have been poisoned. The South East Ambulance Service told the Mirror paramedics had responded to an incident at HMP Lewes that was reported to them at about midday.

A spokesperson said it was an ongoing incident.

It is understood at least eight ambulance, police and fire service teams at at the scene at HMP Lewes. The Mirror has contacted Sussex Police and the East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service for comment.

According to The Argus, at least two people are said to be in a life-threatening condition but this has not been confirmed by emergency services.

HMP Lewes is a category that holds 692 prisoner in a mix of single and double cells. As a category B prison, HMP Lewes houses prisoners who are taken directly from court in the local area.
