US warships helped to defend Israel against Iran's 180 ballistic missile barage
US destroyers in the eastern Mediterranean Sea 'took down multiple missiles' launched by Iran into Isreal this evening, officials have claimed.
Dan Lamothe, a national security reporter covering the US military, took to X claiming: "US destroyers in the eastern Mediterranean Sea took down multiple missiles launched by Iran at Israel on Tuesday night, U.S. defense officials said. At the moment, those there include the USS Arleigh Burke, USS Cole, and USS Bulkeley. Additional destroyers are in the Red Sea."
In a televised statement by the White House this evening, a spokesperson said the US military worked "closely" with the IDF to "help defend Israel against this attack". It added: "US naval destroyers joined Israeli air defence units in firing interceptors to shoot down inbound missiles."
Earlier, Israel Defense Forces announced that a barrage of missiles were raining down on Jerusalem. It wrote on X: "All Israeli civilians are in bomb shelters as rockets from Iran are fired at Israel." Iran fired approximately 200 missiles in the region shortly after 5:30pm this evening. It came after Israeli troops launched a wave of deadly attacks across Lebanon in recent days, killing 1,000 people, before invading southern Lebanon last night to carry out what it called a “limited” raid against Hezbollah.
Air raid sirens were heard ringing out across Israel as footage taken from above Jerusalem saw dozens of glowing missiles flying over the region. Residents have been ordered by the IDF to take cover and remain close to bomb shelters.
