IPS officer Nalin Prabhat appointed as new head of NSG

Seasoned Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Nalin Prabhat has been appointed as the new Director General of the National Security Guard (NSG).

The announcement of his appointment to India's premier anti-terrorism agency was made by the Personnel Ministry.

Currently serving as Additional Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Prabhat's appointment of NSG has been approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).

His tenure will last until his retirement on August 31, 2028.


Background of the NSG and Prabhat's predecessor
History


The NSG, also known as the "black cats," is a federal contingency force founded in 1984.

Before Prabhat's appointment, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) Chief Daljit Singh Chawdhary was temporarily overseeing the unit.

Prabhat, an IPS officer from the 1992 batch of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, will now take over this critical role in India's counterterrorism efforts.

In related news, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has also approved Sapna Tewari for the role of Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau (IB).

Tewari, another IPS officer from the 1992 batch but from the Odisha cadre, is currently serving as Additional Director in IB.

Her tenure as Special Director will span two years from her date of assumption or until her retirement on April 30, 2026.
