The Indian Premier League now faces a serious threat of cancelation as the coronavirus outburst continues to rise frantically.

According to an official, the 13th IPL edition will be called-off.

He also reiterated that the mega auction will not take place in the 2021 season.

Earlier, the BCCI had suspended India's cash-rich league till April 15.

"IPL will not happen this year. We all know how the situation is at the moment in the country and no one will take any risk. One can't have social distancing in the stadium. It's better to play IPL next year," the source stated.

Postponement


While the coronavirus outbreak led to the postponement of the upcoming IPL edition, it was later suggested that the tournament could be played behind closed doors.

Previously, the government had imposed stern travel restrictions in the wake of COVID-19.

Meanwhile, the countrywide lockdown of 21 days further brings down the chances of a full-fledged IPL this year.

Speculations


There were a number of speculations that IPL could follow the template of 2009 season, which was completed inside 37 days.

South Africa played host to the second edition of IPL due to Lok Sabha Elections in India.

It commenced on April 18 and was wrapped up on May 24.

As many as 22 double-headers were scheduled during that edition.

The IPL 2021 mega auction was supposed to see all marquee names going under the hammer.

But as per the source, the rule may not come into effect if the incumbent season gets called-off.

"No mega auction will take place. We will inform the franchises once we get final confirmation from the Indian government, the same season can continue next season," he said.
