Here's How WhatsApp Cracks Down on 22.3 Million Accounts in India, Tightens Security

WhatsApp has ramped up its security measures, cracking down on a staggering 22.3 million accounts in India during the first quarter of 2024. This marks a significant increase compared to the same period last year, highlighting the growing challenge of online scams and user safety concerns in the country.

The crackdown targeted accounts reported by users through WhatsApp's complaint system, those found violating Indian laws or WhatsApp's terms of service, and those flagged by the Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC).

WhatsApp cited Rule 4(1)(d) and Rule 3A(7) of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, as grounds for the bans.

According to WhatsApp's monthly report for January, February, and March 2024, the number of banned accounts steadily increased throughout the quarter. In January, 6.7 million accounts were removed, including 1.4 million proactively banned before any complaints were filed. February saw a surge to 7.6 million banned accounts, with 1.4 million proactively banned, followed by 7.9 million bans in March, including 1.4 million proactive bans. This upward trend reflects WhatsApp's heightened efforts to combat misuse of its platform.

The banned accounts were primarily targeted for violating WhatsApp's policies, including engaging in scams and spam that compromised user privacy. This surge in bans highlights the widespread misuse of the platform, particularly in India, which boasts over 530 million monthly active users, the highest globally.
