NATO Chief Warns China Against Supporting Russia's War in Ukraine
China has bolstered its trade and military ties with Russia In recent years as the United States and its allies have levied sanctions on both countries. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg emphasized that China must cease supporting Russia's war in Ukraine if it seeks a positive relationship with the West, delivering a stern warning that Beijing cannot maintain its current stance without consequences.
He noted that China supports Russia's war economy by providing high-end technology such as semiconductors. In 2023, 90% of Russia's microelectronics were imported from China, enabling the production of missiles, tanks, and aircraft. Additionally, China is aiding Russia with advanced satellite technology and imaging capabilities.
Stoltenberg cautioned against Western allies becoming overly reliant on China, as they did with Russia in the past. He stressed the need to avoid dependence on Chinese money, raw materials, and technology to prevent vulnerability. Trade between China and Russia reached a record high of $240.1 billion in 2023, a 26.3% increase from the previous year. Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to visit China in May for talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, marking his first international trip of his new presidential term.
