PTI President Pervaiz Elahi arrested in Lahore

LAHORE: The Anti-Corruption Establishment with the help of the police in Punjab province has detained former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) president Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi from near his Lahore residence, as per the official statement.

Elahi was in his car and "trying to flee" when he was apprehended, said the interim information minister Amir Mir, who confirmed the detention on Thursday, reports, The Express Tribune.

He was detained on the Zahoor Elahi Road, that is true. The Minister told a private TV programme that the man was detained while attempting to leave. "His home was the target of several raids. He was required. Today, two armored cars appeared out of nowhere (from the home). He was seated inside a vehicle. Law enforcement officers attempted to halt and inspect the bulletproof cars at a checkpoint, said  Amir Mir.

The reports said that the minister claimed that the former chief minister refused to unlock the door of his bulletproof car during the arrest and that this forced law enforcement to damage the car's side mirror. The driver's side window of the car was attempted to be broken after resistance. Pervez Elahi was in the vehicle, the man claimed.

The Minister stressed that there were numerous instances of poor preparation during the earlier attempts to capture Elahi, which is why the arrest was made today after careful planning. The son of the former chief minister, Moonis Elahi, tweeted shortly after the arrest, "The series of arbitrary arrests began in January, and it was then that my father told me that even if they arrest me, we must stand by Imran Khan."
