Joe Biden awards Medal of Valour to Indian-origin NYPD cop

NEW YORK: An Indian-origin New York Police Department (NYPD) officer and 9 others were honoured by the US President Joe Biden with the Medal of Valor, the nation's highest award for bravery by a public safety officer.

At a White House ceremony this week, Sumit Sulan received recognition for killing a shooter who attacked and killed policemen Jason Rivera and Wilbert Mora on January 21, 2022, as they were responding to a domestic violence incident in Harlem, New York City.

If not for Detective Sulan, a very awful day for the citizens of New York may have been even more devastating, with a far larger death toll, President Biden stated during the Medal of Valour Ceremony.

The three officers put themselves in harm's way, saida statement from the White House, to defend a mother and son from an armed individual threatening violence in their home.

After receiving a 911 call, officers Rivera and Mora—who were given posthumous awards—positioned themselves between the attacker and the other house guests.

They were attacked, shot several times, and eventually passed away from their wounds.

Just 45 seconds after the terrible incident started, Detective Sulan, who was still a rookie at the time, maintained the security of the bystanders and killed the shooter with his service weapon.

Detective Sulan had only been with the 32nd Precinct for two months on that horrible day when the shots started flying. two weeks. But he immediately took action. He protected the mother and brother from the bullets before pulling his revolver and firing twice, hitting the shooter and putting a stop to the situation, Biden said.

The President, who met Sulan shortly after the incident, said, "And the entire nation is grateful for the quick thinking, swift action, and courage under fire that he demonstrated." After the incident, Sulan received a promotion to Detective and earned the moniker "super rookie" for his bravery.

Sulan's mother told The New York Post that her kid was still having trouble processing what had happened two days after the ambush.

Sulan's mother, who immigrated to the United States from India some 15 years ago, stated, "His brain is stuck on the circumstance."
