The pretty little village named one of the most beautiful in the Cotswolds

The Cotswolds is known for its chocolate box villages with winding lanes, spit'n'sawdust pubs and access to spectacular scenery. But which is the prettiest Cotswolds village of them all? Of course, that is a matter of opinion, but there appears to be something of a consensus.

A slew of reviewers have pointed to Lower Slaughter as the number one Cotswolds spot. In fact in 2021, The Times named both Upper and Lower Slaughter - known as The Slaughters - as the prettiest village in the UK.

The picturesque Lower Slaughter, notwithstanding the beauty of Upper Slaughter, boasts lovely little stone-built houses that are connected by quaint bridges.

There is a converted mill in the village with an original water wheel where visitors can buy crafted goods.

The Gloucestershire village is so pretty, it was used as a filming site for the 1944 film Tawny Pip and the 2020 film Emma.

For Emma, shooting locations included the famous Manor House, village hall and of course the mill.

The River Eye runs through the village and is crossable via two dainty bridges. Lower Slaughter has been inhabited for over 1000 years, according to some records.

Visitors to the village have raved about it on Tripadvisor. One said: "We have been frequent visitors to the picturesque village of Lower Slaughter and often walk this attractive little road.

"The Wardens way is nearby as too is the Old Mill and museum which is a short distance away.

"The highlight is the little river which runs through the village. Lower Slaughter has been voted as the most attractive village in England and if visited early, is a highly enjoyable place to visit. My advice is to arrive early as parking can be difficult otherwise."

Another wrote: "Staying in Bourton on the Water, our hosts recommended visiting Lower Slaughter and we were not disappointed. We were stunned by the picturesque location, it was so beautiful.

"Due to health reasons, my partner cannot walk far, so we drive slowly through the village, stopping occasionally to soak in the beauty. Do not miss seeing this village."
