Angry people all around

The world is full of angry people. It is some kind of angst that the younger generation, in particular, experience. We come across an angry boss, angry householder, angry friend, angry commuter, angry student.… The list is endless. They become impatient, let off steam and the litany of angry people goes on. That is why St Paul says, do not let the sun go down on your anger.

Because sustained anger leads to loss of self control. It could lead to violence.

It it best to avoid speaking out when angry, for it gives rise to a hot exchange of words that cannot be taken back. But not all anger is bad; sometimes there is aneed to express anger for our very survival. We need to stand up for ourselves when we have been violated or injustice has been done. But we could be gentle and confrontational without shouting and screaming.

Anger expressed in a healthy fashion can have positive results. In this age of instant gratification, there is a lot of impatience all round. And impatience can lead to anger, violence and frustration. This is very evident in traffic jams.

So, we need to know the difference between healthy anger and unhealthy anger. Anger is not hatred, it is just not being in control of emotions. Such confusion about an emotion does not help those who need to respond to their environment appropriately — sometimes with anger and other times with equanimity. Let us learn to harness anger for constructive purposes and promote a peaceful society.
